Inaugural Diverse Perspectives Seminar: Michael Penn

We are very excited to announce that Dr. Michael Penn is confirmed as our inaugural Diverse Perspectives Seminar Series speaker! Dr. Penn will be visiting Stanford on April 18, 2019, and we are pleased to invite you to participate in this event. Diverse Perspectives is a seminar series organized by SURPAS and BioAIMS, bringing a trainee-nominated speaker to campus to talk about their personal experiences of navigating diversity and inclusion in the academy.

Please take a moment to fill out this very short interest form to learn more about participating in this upcoming event: Diverse Perspectives - Interest Form.
We also encourage any trainees who are passionate about diversity and inclusion to contact us if you are interested in contributing a small time commitment to help make this event a success. The DPSS will center on a seminar on diversity and inclusion in the academic and research setting by a trainee-nominated academic, non-profit, and/or business leader.

Michael is a highly regarded advocate for promoting diversity and inclusion in academic and industrial research, and his brief bio is included below. During Michael's visit, we will also be arranging small group meetings with Michael and a trainee-hosted  discussion surrounding the experiences of currently marginalized members of the Stanford community.
Dr. Penn earned his B.S. from Morehouse College and his M.D.-Ph.D. at UCSF. Michael then moved to Genentech for the next 9 years and was recruited to become a VP at Gladstone, focusing on diversity, mentoring, and strategy. In 2017, Michael moved on to tackle some independent ventures, including founding H.E.L.L.A. Healthcare Ventures (HHV) consulting for UCSF and Miya Health.
